FTC fines Henry Schein for their Dentrix Software
On January 10th, the Federal Trade Commision fined dental software vendor Henry Schein for lying about Dentrix G5’s encryption capabilities. At issue, is the statement included in the G5 software’s brochure: “The database also provides new encryption capabilities that can help keep patient records safe and secure. And of course, encryption plays a key role in your efforts to stay compliant with HIPAA security standards.”
In order to comply with HIPAA standards, data should be encrypted using top grade algorithms, such as AES. As of 2013, the US Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERN) noted Dentrix did not use minimal HIPAA encryption levels, despite saying so in its marketing materials.
Despite the fact that CERN warned Henry Shein, Dentrix G5 was continued to sell the software under the false claims. Instead of updating the encryption from DES to AES, they chose to simply adjust the wording they use in their marketing materials.
